Workspaces are discipline-specific organizations of the asset database. Combined with Roles, they control which assets users can view, create, modify, and delete. Every asset database must have at least one workspace, and typically will have several workspaces and multiple roles. Each workspace has its own asset hierarchy, Knowledge Views, search definitions, and display filters. Workspaces are created, modified and deleted using the Workspace Manager.

Once a workspace has been created and the appropriate Access Rights have been granted, the workspace can be organized it by creating new assets or sharing assets from other workspaces.

For example, a typical asset database might have three workspaces:

  • Master Model Workspace - This workspace would contain the assets as imported from a plant design system, organized in a hierarchical manner familiar to a plant design system user. A user with access to this workspace would be responsible for synchronizing the workspace with the source data as well as informing users of other workspaces of any relevant changes that affect their workspaces.
  • Inspection Workspace - This workspace would have the same assets as in the plant design workspace, however they would be organized in a manner that would make sense to the inspectors, by circuits for example. This workspace would also contain thickness monitoring locations, which might not be relevant to other disciplines.
  • Maintenance Workspace - Like the inspection workspace, this workspace would have the same assets as the plant design system, but organized by work packages.
